Wheels and Tires for a C1-62

Will a set of P225/60-15's on 7" Wheels fit on the front end and not rub the fenders in full turns? Also P235's for the rear.THANKS IN ADVANCE..

    John...

I believe the widest tires usable without modifications are 215/75R15's.A lot of driver install the classic radial's P205/75R15's.

I am looking to also get some bigger tires for my 62. The below are from the archives. It looks like 225/70-15's will fit.

      Chris

On my '56 I'm running stock 5" rims on the front with Goodyear Integrity 205/75-15's (27.1" dia) and on the rear I'm running '67 ralley 6" rims (with welded nubs) with GY Integrity 225/70-15's (27.3' dia). In these sizes, both WW and BW are available. I run the GY Interity tires on my '64 also and on my Buick LeSabre, which I drive faster and during 100*+ days driving on long trips in the Southwest. My life is just as valuable when I'm driving the Buick as it is when driving either of the vettes. If I felt a tire was dangerous to have on my Corvette, I sure wouldn't have it on my Buick. If you want to see what the car look like with these sizes, check www.vintagevettesoftheozarks.com and look under members cars (Joe P).

The front wheels are 5X15 with a 3.125" backspacing. With the
205/75 tires there is plenty of clearance between the fender and also the
frame so the offset isn't real critical. On the rear the 6X15 rally wheels
have a 3.75" backspacing. On my '56, with the 225/70 tires I have approx
3/8" to 7/16" clearance to the leaf springs and I have about 2.25" vertical
clearance between the sidewall and the inside lip of the fender. I've only
hit one dip in the road hard enough that the rear springs compressed enough
for the rear sidewalls to touch the inside fender lip. Just put a little bit
on red paint on the sidewall which cleaned right off. No damage to the tire
or fender. Your '62 should have more clearance between the sidewall and the
inside fender lip since you have the small amount of fender flare that my 56
      doesn't have.

      I don't see a problem with you running the 6X15 w/3.75" backspacing
on the front along with 225/70 tires. Should work fine. The SS's will look
great on your car. I was considering getting a set of AR "Saltflat Specials"
that look like the old Halibrand "kidney slots" that were used on the '56's
that were raced in 1956 but they only have a 3.375" backspacing and that
would have moved the rear wheels outward another 3/8" over what I have now
which would have made it a lot easier for the tire sidewall to contact the
inner fender lip. Tom must have his '56 setting higher in the rear then
stock because if I were to put 15X7 with 4" backspacing on the rear of my
car, I wouldn't have hardly any vertical fender travel clearance and the
tires would be sticking out past the fenders by 3/4".

purchased my GY Integrity tires at Wal Mart.
They don't stock them but can special order them in about 4 days. Best price
in town and for less then $10 a tire, you get mounting, balancing, valve
stem and road hazard warranty plus free wheel balancing every 6,000 miles or
6 months for the life of the tires. They are available in both whitewall and
blackwall in the 225/70-15 size (at least they did when I purchased mine
      several years ago).

I have 2257515 on my 56. Nothing touches or rubs. The rear wheels are 15x7 steel from a mid 70s GM A-body wagon (Malibu, Cutlass, etc) and 15x6 steel wheels from mid 70s A-body sedan (I use wheels from mid 70s A-body cars because they have the same bolt hole pattern as Vettes).

      205/75 27.1 closest to 6.7 x 15
      225/70 27.3
      225/75 28.3

      width x ratio = x x 2 =Y x wheel diameter = tire dia

stock rim 5" wide x 4.75" bolt patternx 9/16" offset
The 1960 5" wheel had a +.56" offset (centerline of the rim was .56" inboard of the plane of the mounting surface).

      67 rally rim 15 x 6 w/1/8" (.060) offset
      66 rally rim 15 x 5.5 w/.44" offset

      CRR-61615 15 x 6 3.375 backspace $120 (3/8" offset?)

      GY 225/70R15 RS-A $115 Walmart

I used to run 15X7 and 15X8 American Magnesiums on my '58 way back when it was a tow car for my '52 Olds. I think I ysed F-70 15 tires on those and the rears needed the 7 inch width to clear the fenders with the 8's up front.

          Roy...

When I had 8.85 inch wide tires on my '61, they scrapped the inside front wheel wells during turning. Could using wider rims cause this?

If you have wider wheels they could, but I don't on my older 55 , Don't know about a newer 61 Corvette , cant afford a newer 61 year vett.
