    C1: 1958 paint combo questions

I have a friend who is about to paint his '58 Yellow/charcoal car. Here are the questions:

what color is the back side of the Trunk?
what color is the back side of the Deck lid?
what color is the Fuel tank cover area?

My buddy doesn't want to make a mistake with the painting. He's an NCRS guy, but not very computer savvy to get on here and ask for himself.

    Many thanks!!
    Tony

Shouldn't the lip be body color like the hood?

          Tony,

All of the areas you mention get painted Charcoal as well as the gauge cluster, heater controls/radio console, kick panels, lower dash panel in front of passenger seat and complete trunk interior.

          Hope this is helpful.

It's going to be interesting when the NCRS....

judges see my '58. I have '58 #9128 which is a true Black (vs. charcoal) car with charcoal interior. The car was in an unrestored condition when I receieved it other than the exterior paint. The interior still had the original charcoal dash pad, door panels, steering wheel, and carpet in it (all of which were in very sad shape). The interesting part is all the painted interior surfaces/trunk that should be charcoal are black. My intention is to restore it "original" verses the NCRS standard. I'm still not sure how to document this other than pictures.

Yes - exterior-to-interior color breaks look like this (different colors, but same idea).

                Thanks John!

I thought I had it painted correctly. Sure would hate to have to take off the weather stripping and remove the trunk and deck lid and start over. I guess I was confused by an earlier post. Old age?

John, did the factory use a masking template similar to how the inside hood edge was covered during the black out process or did they physically mask it off? In other words was there a hard or a soft line between the interior and exterior colors? Thanks.

                    Ted -

I expect they used cardboard/paperboard masks like they used on the hood at the blackout operation that left a "fuzzy" break line; hand-masking with tape and paper would have been too time-consuming.
