    '66 BREAKERLESS DISTRIBUTOR REVERSAL

The previous owner of the '66 small block I just bought installed a Crane breakerless ignition kit. I have the original distributor and 202 coil, and would like to re-install them. There are two red wires currently on the pos side of the coil, and the wire from the distributor is attached to the resistor. If I understand the electrical diagram, when I install the original distributor, one of the red wires on the coil should be connected to the resistor, and the black wire from the distributor should go to the neg coil terminal. Does this sound correct, and if so, how can I tell which of the two red wires currently on the pos coil goes to the resistor? Thanks...

It likes the pink wire coming through the firewall is still attached to the bottom connector on the resistor, as well as the one from the breakerless distributor I am removing. There is also a pink wire connected to the top connection of the resistor that goes into the wiring harness.

      Rob,

There should be two wires going to the + side of the coil and both should be pink in color. The first is from the top of the resistor going into the wire harness to the coil + and is powered with reduced voltage through the resistor for driving. The second is from the starter selonoid and is powered only when cranking to give a full 12 volts to the coil + for cold starting. The - side of the coil goes the distributor wire. Better check the wires with a voltmeter before starting because someone else has been there before you.

Be careful to install the coil as shown in the AIM so the positive post on the coil does not get close to the ignition shield because this is not a fused circuit and people have had problems here in the past. Also, when you install the distributor make sure the hold down and distributor is clean and provides a good ground to the engine for the points to work properly.

        Hey Rob -

The previous owner made this change for a reason - perhaps something wasn't performing as it should. This might be an ideal time to thoroughly go through that original distributor to make sure it is up to spec. Then change it back.

          Tim,

Do the two pink wires that go to the pos on the coil have side terminal connections, like the distributor wire. If so, are they both connected to the same one, or do they each have their own? Also, is the pink wire from the solenoid "hot" all the time, as opposed to the one coming through the firewall, so I can test and make sure it is the correct one? Thanks Again...

            Rob -

The two pink wires (one from the secondary side of the ballast resistor, the other from the small "R" terminal on the starter solenoid) both go on the (+) terminal on the coil. The one from the resistor provides reduced-voltage ignition power with the key in the "On" (normal running) position, and the one from the starter solenoid provides a full 12 volts only when the starter is cranking; unless the starter is energized, that pink wire from the solenoid has zero voltage.

The pink wire from the ignition switch (full 12 volts) to the primary side of the resistor comes through the adjacent grommet in the firewall; the pink wire from the other end of the resistor (secondary end) goes into the engine harness and comes out at the coil, connected to the (+) terminal.

              John,

Do both the pink wires have the side terminal connections like the one from the distributor?

Yes, originally the pink wires had an open (U-shaped) side terminal blade connection.
