I finally got all the parts to install the clutch pedal return spring and had a couple of questions. First, how does one put in on. Is there a method or a tool used to close the gap between the spring and the hairpin hook? Or, do you attach the spring at the top last? Also, where the spring connect at the top of the clutch bracket; does the oval fit in the groove or does it slide past the groove and onto the shaft? I pulled the lower splash pan out to get to the lower bracket so I have some room to work.

Re: C1 clutch pedal return spring
Ray: I learned a rather unorthodox way of attaching the spring. Put the end of it in a vise and bend it in different directions while you insert flat washers between the coils. This will in effect expand the spring several inches and make it long enough to attach. Then simply depress the clutch and allow the flat washers to fall out. It sounds odd but it works.- Top

Re: C1 clutch pedal return spring
Ray, as to the other part of your question, attach the top of the spring first. Attach the "hairpin" clip to the bracket by inserting the longer part of the clip into the hole. The other side of the clip will be against the top of the bracket. This is the way my '57 spring is attached. Others may comment as I don't remember if later years used this same attachment method.- Top
