Solid axle fuel leak

solid axle fuel leak ed jennings i have recently purchased a the car is in pretty good shape and runs very nicely but there is a very strong odor of gasoline in the passenger compartment it is much stronger when the car is moving than when it is standing with the engine off i have removed the fuel tank cover and checked out the engine compartment pretty throughly and not found the source as yet are there any specific areas on these cars that are particularily prone to leakage right now i suspect the fuel tank but can't find any sure sign of leakage any tips would be appreciated

re solid axle fuel leak p terry ed i have also and from time to time have experienced the same problem i noticed the problem especially when the tank is near full and i go around a tight corner i took the tank out and checked for leaks none were found i think the bigest contributer may be the gas cap leaking and overflow was getting into the area around the tank i replaced the cap overflow hose below the gas filler area and the vent hose from the tank sending unit to the filler area this helped a lot good luck

re solid axle fuel leak problem solved ed jennings found a split in the vent hose which goes back to the gas filler area it was sloshing gas out every time i went around a left hand turn split was on trhe bottom where it wasn't obvious of course thanks for the help
