How hard is it to change out the headlight switch on a 70-72, can I just drop the dash on the driver side back to change the switch? are does it have to come all the way out? thanks

Re: switch HL
It depends on how clever you are with your hands... Experienced Corvette mechanics with small hands and 'rate buster' experience can do the job without fully removing the speedo/tach cluster as the Chassis Service Manual (CSM) teaches, but there ARE tricks....
When you loosen the main instrument cluster from the dash it'll move out 'maybe' an inch or two before there's and interference factor. Reading the CSM will teach you the main dash wiring harness is held in place by a fold-over retaining clip between the speedo and tach; that's the resistance you feel to any further forward movement of the cluster.
If you try to FORCE it without snaking behind to unclip the wiring harness you risk 'sawing' through the harness and making an electrical mess of things! But, those with experience know they can move the instrument cluster out far enough to reach behind, unclip the wiring harness and gain a few more inches of outward movement (especially if the speedo and tach drive cables are disconnected) to gain enough rear access to change out the HL switch without dropping the steering column and fully removing the cluster....- Top

Re: switch HL
I recently changed out a 73 headlight switch (should be the same?) on my friend's car and, other than a cramp in my arm, a cut on my hand, it was very "do-able" without taking the dash apart. If you follow Jack's advice you should be able to do - go slowly.
