First letter means Flint, the next two numbers are month, the nest two numbers are day of month, then there should be two letters after that, usually the D stands for a powerglide car

      Larry,

It is my understanding that a '58 Corvette block, as well as early '59, has a casting number 3737739. It should be cast on the upper rear of the block. I can't remember which side. The opposite side will have a date code cast. The D at the end of your number should also have a second letter i.e. DG for 1 X 4 & Powerglide. The month code on the pad for '57 to 59 used 1-12. 01 - 12 was used starting sometime in 1960. My best guess is the number you have supplied is not for a '58 Corvette 283 block. I'm certain others more knowledgeable than I can tell you what you have for a block. My information comes from the NCRS Specifications Guide for 1953-1967 Corvettes.

The single-digit "D" suffix was used on '58-'64 passenger car 2-barrel 283's with Powerglide; your block casting date (behind pass. side cylinder head) will define which year.
