    trim tags

I am looking at a car which does not have the correct trim tag.If I buy this car and add an option or two, where would I go to have a trim tag that at least matches the car?color/interior etc.Is there one shop that is better than the next. The car obviously will not be judged(except by future potential buyers!!)But I would like to have things as close to "correct" as possible.

Jordan, there are NO correct reproduction trim tags on the market for C-2's or C-3's. Besides you have crossed the line from restoration to counterfeiting when you change colors, add options, etc.

The line between restoration and counterfeiting has been addressed in the Judging Chairman's Column in the Restorer magazine more than one time.

But the beat of bidders on ebay go on, build a collectable Corvette from a trim tag from ebay, build the car, and pass it off as a original car....

            Its a CRIME.

And it has been repeated in judging schools over and over.

What if you have documentation (tank sticker, original owner statement), can you build the car to those specs without it being illegal? This is more of a question for putting back a correct numbers engine.

It is not illegal to build a car the way you want it as long as you do not alter the VIN. What most have a problem with is that you take a yellow car and paint it black, or a 300 hp and make a 435 out of it, doing what you want and then representing the car as something it is not. Somewhere along the line it gets sold. Whether the owner that modified it to suit him or the next owner does it, the car will all of the sudden become an "original" what you made out of it. That is counterfeiting.

Some very high dollar cars that have changed hands recently have been bought back by the sellers when proof was presented that they were counterfeit.
