    Repro 1970 Tank Sticker?

    Hi guys,

Have 1970 vette with completely destroyed tank sticker. Cannot be read due to water damage. Checked other usual places, behind radio, behind steering column and there is nothing else. . Car is all original and untouched, except tires as far as options go. Can and should these be reproduced? If so, where can I get a list of examples and format?

    Thanks!

Build Sheets have also be found under the seats in the springs, no big task to remove the seats and look. Don't know of anyone duplicating the tank sheets but did hear of people with contacts to law inforcement agencies having a forensic proceedure that makes the sticker print visable long enough to photograph. I don't know of anyone but maybe someone else on the board can give that information. Also check with persons or businesses that do restorations of paintings. Good Luck, Bill #20328

I have a 70 too and found a copy of the Corvette Order Copy doc between the steering col and the lower part of the dash. It was not visible without dissasembling, so perhaps it is the same in your car. If you didn't this already you have to lower a little the column (two upper bolts and two lower) to found the sticker, if it is there... Just a comment, Roberto NCRS #30019, RMC

I don't know of any repro sources, however if you'd like to see a readable example of a build sheet I have mine scanned & loaded on my web page. It was located behind the dash on the right side. I've also heard of people finding them stuffed inside the frame rails in the left rear. ~Juliet

          Why?

Tank sticker is NOT an item that is judged on any concours circuit I known of. NCCB/Bloomington is the only circuit that checks and they only look for with 'window' or 'Maroney' version of the sticker....

Beyond wondering what use a 'reproduction' tank sticker might have except to lead potential secondary/tertiary owners of the car into a potentially 'false' sense of comfort, you can see any number of examples of orignal 'build/job' sheets and/or tanks stickers by reviewing past issues of the Corvette Restorer magazine as well as M.F. Dobbins' Corvette Fact Book.

Creating one is duck soup as it's a virtual mirror image of the window sticker printed on multi-part, carbon paper via Teletype. Alas, this is a key reason they didn't last -- core paper stock was cheap/inexpensive and protection against weather/elements on the top of the fuel tank was gossamer at best. My guess is Triple A Enterprises (one firm that specializes in reproduction window or archanely Maroney stickers) could easily 'tool' to produce build job sheets if needed....

Only real problem, in my opinion, is the hand annoation.... Original sheets bore the car's 'job' number as well as another similar handwritten number that corresponded to the order number/dealer destination number. Who's to say what's 'correct' in terms of the hand annotation aspect of these numbers....
