I am getting my '67BB ready for the upcoming regional in Louisiana and I am questioning the position of my heat riser. The judging manual (JM) says "the valve counterbalance weight points toward the front of the car on big block cars", but I am unsure what that means. Currently on my car the riser is on the front side of the exhaust manifold but the counter weight points toward the engine (toward the starter). If I move it to where the counter weight points toward the front of the car, I am concerned it may not have any clearance from the frame.
I asked a friend to look at his bowtie candidate car for me and he states the following:
"I checked last evening, here it goes. It looks to me as if yours is reversed. The counter weight points towards the firewall (heater core) and moves down when open. No clearance problem on my car that I can see. I don't think that mine has ever been removed."
This would seem the most logical position for it with regard to clearances (not that GM has ever been logical) but that would mean the JM is wrong. Can anyone comment on the correct postion and how it relates to what the JM states? Thanks.
