The vent window frame hinge is spot welded to the frame, Does any body have any idea how to go about repacing it? This is the hinge on the glass frame,{STAINLESS}. It seems like you need a set of special jaws on a spot welder. Some on has to have the secret. Hope you can help. This is for a 67 coupe

Re: c2 vent window hinge
Neither the hinge nor the frame itself is stainless; they're plain cold rolled steel. Yes, the spot welder used a lower jaw that fit inside the channel. After welding they were brazed to fill the opening and add a little radius between the frame and hinge edges.- Top

Re: c2 vent window hinge
Mine was also broken. A friend fixed it for me by drilling a small hole in the hinge and welding inside the hole to the frame. He then ground/polished off the weld flat with the hinge and it looks like the original. He also said the metal frame was steel but after buffing etc. I left it out in the weather to see if things would begin to rust. Well the only place any rust appeared was in the welded hole spot where the welding material was. Power Buffing on the frame did not remove any chrome or coating so I believe the metal is something other than cold rolled steel. It also isn't typical stainless in that it does attract a magnet.- Top

Re: many types of SS; some are magnetic
Thank you for your responce. I was able to find some one with a spot welder but the tongs are unable to reach the inside of the frame.I run into the same problem if i drill the frame and try to mig weld frome the inside the frame. the mig head is to large.I guess that I can drill the hinge and weld from the outside. your saying that the metal that you weld will buuf up and be unnoticible?- Top

Its SS
Its magnetic but it is SS. I thought it was chrome plated to, till we tried toweld it.Mine hinge came off. We welded it with SS. Drilled a small hole in the hinge and frame welded it and ran a small beed down the back of the the hinge. Then ground off anything that showed the repair and polished. Will not rust ever and you can't tell the repair was made. Mike- Top

Re: Its SS
It would be interesting to know which stainless steel alloy those frames are made from. The magnetic stainless alloys (ferritic?) I am familiar with are dark in color and unsuitable for aesthetic purposes. Their real beauty is moderately high strength in corrosive, high-temperature environments.- Top
