    69 Rear bumper preservation

I have a fellow co-worker who has a pair of 69 rear bumpers that have the GM stickers still on the interior surfaces.

    Two questions:

    1) Did the bumpers come frome the assembly plant in 69 with these stickers, or are these service replacements?

    2) He wants to go after some light surface rust on the interior surfaces, but doesn't want to damage these stickers IF their correct, or create worse issues by potentially opening a bigger can of worms by going after the light rust.

I guessed that these are service replacements and told him to leave the rust alone and spray the interior surfaces with a non-yellowing clear enamel.

    We're both curious.

    Thanks,

    Chuck

    Re: 69 Rear bumper preservation

Chuckster, your co-worker needs a resto project...He clearly has tired of watching reality shows on the tube and has too much time on his hands. ( PS: Rust on the inside of the bumpers like that is TERMINAL...it just keeps eating through until it comes out the shiny side like steel-eating bacteria. He should just sell those service replacement stickers and the rust to me. )

Who would really want those white and blue sticker thingys with that big ole ugly GM logo on their bumpers anyway right?

So what if he soaked them to let them release from the steel and then allow them to dry in a safe place. Clean up the inside of those bumpers and spray a satin clear inside them and then replace the tags.

You don't want the tags - they identify the parts as non-original Service replacements; the production parts had no tags or stickers.

Re: Got a chance to see them

He brough them in today for mee to look at. They are indeed starting to rust up pretty good on the insides where he'll need to go after them with probably light grit sand paper or media blast them.

Then probably then clear coat them.....without the stickers
