I have a '74, 454, manual car...I'm questioning the means in which to mount and locate the TCS Solenoid. I've seen the availability of mounting studs in parts catalogs, but based on the configuration described in the TIM & JG, I'm not sure as to which manifold bolt gets replaced with this mounting stud. Also, it appears that this TCS Solenoid part can be (what looks to be an appropriate fit) secured by attaching it via one of the bolts that secures the coil bracket to the manifold. Can anyone shed some additional light on this for me? Thanks.

It is mounted behind the carborator on a 454 and is mounted with a bolt. I think their may be an unused threaded hole if not the coil bolt may be the location. The plastic end points to the side not the front on a 454.

Re: Mounting '74 TCS Solenoid
Terry, that's where I'm going to install it. I believe the mounting stud might apply to a different engine application. Thanks...you did help.- Top

Re: Mounting '74 TCS Solenoid
Cary,
I'm not qualified to advise you on it's function...for that I would refer you to the '73-'74 TIM & JG, item 19 on page 5 will describe the operations check. Item 4 on page 89 will provide you with details on the configuration/application. I will say that the overall function of the TCS Solenoid is Emissions related. Where to buy one...try searching TCS Solenoids on e-Bay...I was successful in locating an NOS GM one there. I had also located a used one at Corvette Country in Boscawen NH (603) 796-2104. Doc Rebuild shows them available in his catalog...but he doesn't have the blueprints for the 454 manual, so he doesn't reproduce that particular one. He does have the TCS hose kits though...they're pictured in his catalog. I found that all of this is like working on a puzzle...don't rush and take one piece at a time. Good luck.- Top

Re: Mounting '74 TCS Solenoid
Functionally, TCS (Transmission-Controlled Spark) kills vacuum to the distributor vacuum advance can unless the car is in high gear (unless it hasn't warmed up yet or is overheating). Most folks bypass it or disable it anyway so the vacuum advance works all the time.- Top
