Re: rear engine seal
I had the same problem on an engine rebuild. Is it dripping down the front of the inspection cover, or out the bottom? I replaced the seal with an expensive high performance one, made sure the parting line did not line up with the seal ends per the instructions, and still had the leak a second time. Did you seal the rear main cap to the block when you installed it, as well as the seal ends?- Top

Re: rear engine seal
The black could be either from assembly lube (likely), or maybe from the elastomer in an improperly installed rear seal (less likely, but then the seal IS leaking).
In itself, the black is not necessarily a concern, but the seal shouldn't be leaking. I also doubt it's going to heal itself and dry up...you're probably going to have to go back in. Like Rob said, be sure to seal the bearing cap and seal ends as directed in the service manual.- Top

Re: rear engine seal
the seal only leakled for about 10 minutes of running. it did quit, maybe a rope seal that dried out sitting for 6 months ?- Top
