Are the cushion retainers in the trailing arm painted black? Are the cushion retainers in the spring zinc plated or natural?

From all the original photos I found, they were bare steel. I removed the zinc plating on the ones I bought with Eagle brand "etching formula" mag wheel cleaner, coated them with machine oil to prevent corrosion and installed them. -

Rob is correct. These retainers are bare steel, hence they will eventually rust simply due to humidity.
Do you still have the original retainers from your '67? If so, I'm curious to know if they are the shallow (early) type that were used exclusively from 63 thru 66 and the early part of 67 or are the the later style, with the taller, steeper lip? The differences are shown in the article I wrote with Joe Lucia on heavy duty rear leaf springs that appeared in a recent issue of the Restorer.
I've recently submitted an update article to appear in an upcoming issue of the Restorer on which style of retainer was used duing which part of the '67 model year. I'm trying to get owners of '67 to tell me if they have the early or late style. To date, I've seen random '67 cars with VINs up thru 6490 with the early style retainers. Sometimes the T-arms will have the early style and the spring will have the later style and sometimes it's vice versa. And sometimes both the T-arms and the spring have the early style. As far as I can tell there is no clear pattern or cut-off relative to VIN for the use of the early style retainers for the '67 model year, but I'd love to hear from any '67 owner who has the early style so that I can add the info to my database.

I will check them tomorrow. Is the article in the Spring 2004 issue? My car was built in May 67. The spring was replaced years ago, but I will check the trailing arm and send you a reply.Comment

I can't actually locate my Restorer issue at the moment and I can't remember which issue it was. Sometime in the past year or so.
