    C6 Question - Reverse necessary?

I read that the C6 requires you to be in reverse when shutting it off. A lot of cars do. But I read that some have found that if you don't with the C6, the battery goes dead.

    Anyone know more about this?

I don't know about the battery going dead, but the alarm isn't set and someone can start the car and drive it off. At least on early versions you could.

you must put it reverse to shut down the electrical systems or the battery will go dead. my C-6 auto must be put in park to do the same thing

It's kinda like you have to put a C3 in reverse to turn the switch to lock so you can get the key out..........

Battery goes dead for shifter mistake?

Before I make a comment on the engineering behind that, what is the reported advantage to killing the battery if the driver makes a mistake where he leaves the shifter?

Been going on since the beginning of the automotive era...No, make that the start of mankind. It's engineering out in front of the average human intellect.

I'm sure there were a bunch of broken arms before the owners of those new-fangled horseless carriages figured out that if you didn't get the timing right, they would kick the blue blazes out of you. I suppose the same could be said about the automobile's predecessor...maroons trying to get on the horse from the starboard side found themselves in a heap at the hitching rail.

              But isn't good engineering about

making life easier and also avoiding or working around those human problems?

Since when is engineering about stranding a motorist because he/she forgot to do something?

They even put buzzers on headlights, make them shut off when you open the door if the engine isn't running, and more these days just so the motorist isn't stranded.

To set up a scenario that punishes one for what people have done for years by killing the battery is hardly good engineering.

And if you work on your own car, there just may be reasons you WANT to shut it off in a gear other than first.

As anyone who as worked in any documentation effort knows, people DO NOT read the manual. They never have and never will. To engineer ignoring fact that is a show of stupidity.

                Engineering Didn't Ignore Stupidity...

"They even put buzzers on headlights, make them shut off when you open the door if the engine isn't running, and more these days just so the motorist isn't stranded."

The C6 Corvette has a DIC (Driver Information Center) display in the instrument cluster that flashes "Put In Reverse" (or some such message) and chimes incessantly as the boob opens the door and gets out while talking on his cell phone...AND STILL they leave the car out of reverse with all this hub-bub going on. The car practically shouts at them...maybe GM should adapt Mikey's vacuum-operated booger picker claw to grab them and pull them back.

Actually, I think the transmission has to be placed in reverse before you shut the car down; doing so after the switch is turned off doesn't help you. Not putting the transmission in reverse leaves the ignition and electronic systems turned on, and the car vulnerable to theft...maybe they need to get it stolen a time or two to realize this is a different technology and they need to learn it. Won't be a problem for me because been doing it my entire life...learned how to drive in the post-Model A era. Now, putting the parking brake on, that would be a RPITA...only use it for, er, "emergencies".

One thing you learn as an engineer...you cannot make things "FOOL PROOF"...you can try (QS9000 comes close), but there is ALWAYS a bigger and more creative fool.

                  Re: Engineering Didn't Ignore Stupidity...

At least part of the electronics are on all the time in a C6, regardless of how you shut it down; otherwise how does it automatically recognize that you have the key in your pocket when you walk up to the (locked) car in a parking lot?

Whizbang electronic features designed by techno-geeks are the downfall of modern higher-priced cars - Mercedes quality took a big-time dive in the last three years almost exclusively due to electrical/electronic failures. They finally figured out they didn't need all that stuff, and have removed over 600 electronic "technology features" from their 2005 models, most of which the customers weren't aware of (because they don't read the 440-page owner's manual), and probably would never use even if they knew about them. Then there's the BMW I-Drive system.....

                    Re: Engineering Didn't Ignore Stupidity...

There is "on", and then there is "ON".

After shutting down properly (shift lever in reverse), the electronics power down to about 5(?) milliamps after several minutes...at that discharge rate, I think it takes a month or so to discharge the battery below cranking level. If the shift lever is not put in reverse before shutdown, the ignition and all the electronics stay "ON" at 10 amps draw (or so I've heard)...drains the battery in about two days.

Single button "on" switches are coming...high-end Lexus and BMWs already have them, and it's on the Prius techno-geek hybrid...push it on and nothing happens, no cranking noise, no engine idling, nothing; you just push the pedal down and go. I'm looking forward to the keyless entry and ignition myself. I understand once owners get used to it, they are frustrated with the inconvenience of their old vehicles.

                      John,
I agree completely. Just got rid of a Buick Riviera that I really liked a lot, in fact it was 90% great car, but the electronic gizmo crap completely ruined the very nice drive and feel of the car. It would have been a fine car if simpler.
