WCFB problems

C1 60 WCFB rebuilt several years ago. Now I'm ready and it's not. It falls on its face and I don't see anything like streams of gas coming out and it drains overnight. You need to crank or prime it to get it to start. After it's been running it starts fine. It will run ok if you take the rpms up slowly.
Can I try something to wash it out or do I need to have it rebuilt again?

One problem with the WCFB was the leather cup on the accelerator pump. If they dry out, they wouldn't pump and you'd go flat if you open the throttle running. They also wouldn't pump that extra gas in for starting, so you crank and crank and crank until the battery is nearly dead.

Sometimes you can take the pump out, soak it in light oil to soften the leather, and then reinstall it carefully so it doesn't turn inside out, like an umbrella flipping over. This isn't always successful and some replace these with a rubber pump seal if they can find one.

If they rolled over dry, they usually formed to that new shape and you never could get them right again. Tossed several over the years. Now I wish I had them back.

That would be my first look.

I ordered a kit for my 57 WCFB's from Daytona Parts Company at www.cartercarb.com. They were very nice when I ordered the parts and extremely helpful when I called with an accelerator pump question. They make their own kits, so you might be able to buy just the accel pump. You can also try www.chucksmithchevys.com.
