I thought I was going to need the ad-on crankshaft pulley to install power steering (no air), but the 2nd groove on the existing pulley already lines up with the power steering pump pulley. Also, one illustration in the assembly manual shows the belt directly from the crankshaft pulley to the power steering pump pulley, and in the N40 belts and pulleys illustration it shows it routed to the H20 pump pulley as well...which way is it supposed to go?

Rob-----
For all practical purposes, there were only 2 p/s pump pullies used for 1963-74 Corvettes with small block (actually, there were 1 or 2 other "rare birds", but I'm not going to get into that issue). One of these pullies is a more-or-less "flat" stamped steel pulley of GM #3770509. When this pulley is used, the add-on, crankshaft pulley is also used. In virtually all cases, the add-on pulley adds a third track to the existing 2 groove crankshaft pulley.
The other p/s pump pulley used for 63-74 Corvette small block applications is a single groove, cast iron pulley of GM #3834720. This is a "drop-down" style pulley. It is used for applications not using the add-on pulley. In other words, for applications in which the forward groove of the single 2 groove crank pulley is used for p/s pump drive.
As a GENERAL rule, HP and SHP small blocks use the cast iron, "drop down" pulley with no add-on pulley. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '66 350HP P.S. PULLEYS AND BELTS
I hate to be swimming upstream on this "Pulley/Belt" discussion; but there is another explanation in this discussion and that is that UPC 6 A4, Belt Routing, V-8 Engines 327, in the AIM is for the '66 Corvette base 327 engine and NOT the L79 327 Special High Perfomance Engine. This is the same for this section in the '67 AIM. Specifically, none of the UPC 6 A4 belt routing examples show the crank shaft to water pump "captive" belt, P/N 3837810, that has been documented to have been on "original" '66 and '67 L79 engines.
Anyway, it is not clear to me that the AIM is incorrect; although many '66 and '67 L79 Corvette engines have been made to conform to the illustrations in the AIM because of confusion in the interpretation of the information in the AIM and the Judging Manuals.

Re: '66 350HP P.S. PULLEYS AND BELTS
Well, I routed the p.s. belt around the crank and H2O pump pulleys. All the auto part stores show it as 45", to include the H2O pulley. It works well, and that's where it will stay, although I don't know what the purpose would be to include the H2O pulley.- Top

Rob - You can't beat success. The Chevrolet Parts Catalog shows P/N 3861936 for 66 CORVETTE (P/S w/Sp. H/Per.) (327) (exc. C.A.C.). It's a 3/8"-45" belt. My comment was that '66 and '67 L79 327 engines originally had a captive belt that ran from the crank shaft pulley to the H2O pump pulley. Pete- Top
