    65 coil springs

I'm confused (nothing new). I have the front end apart on my 65 (300/327 w/AC) and the coil springs appear to be original (one still had the green tag w/# 3851100). They measure 16 5/8" & 16 1/2" measuring from top of one end to the bottom of the other. In searching the archives, it seems they are supposed to be 15 13/32" and that they rarely need to be replaced. My questions are: What is the correct length or am I measuring wrong? My front end seemed to be sagging, why? Thanks. Don H.

    Re: 65 coil springs

    Don -

The free height of the original 3851100 spring was 16.82"; however, the free height measurement is pretty meaningless. Springs are rated by working length at design load, which is 9.98" at 1340# for that spring, with a load rate of 195# per inch (at the spring, not at the wheel) at that design load. Springs generally only lose design load rate if they've lost material (effective wire diameter) due to corrosion.
