    53-62 rear spring codes

Can any one help decipher and determine solid axle rear spring date codes? Specifically, what would be the correct date code range for a 1961 Corvette built in mid October 1960? Thanks

    Chip -

C1 springs are dated with a Julian format and a digit for the year, but I don't recall the exact format offhand; the date can't be seen with the spring assembled to the car. I'd say you'd be fortunate to have an original spring at all, much less find one dated within six months prior to your car's final assembly date.

The code is this: 1,2, or 3-digit Julian code for the day of the year, "E" for Eaton spring, and a single digit for the year. 265 E 0 would be the 265th day of 1960, for example. Many times you can see the spring part number on one side of the car, and the date code on the other set of springs because of the way they sit with the u-bolt and shock mounts.

Mike - I just checked my springs that are out of the car. My dates are 124 E 2 (May 4 62?). My car build date is June 15 62. Am I lucky to have a set 6 weeks before build date? ....Dick

          Dick--
You're right on!!!! Just about the 4-8 week interval we'd expect with springs. Good job!!!

Dick--and of course, with the last name of Eaton, you'd better get the Eaton-manufactured springs right, even if nothing else on the car is correct!!!!!!!

Mike - I plan to do just that. My name doesn't get me any discount, I still plan to have Mike at Eaton Springs) go through the restoration process that Mr Hinkley wrote about in Corvette Enthusiast. Have a good one and great weekend...Dick
