    Re: Nassau/Daytona/Sebring 1957

Patrick, don't mean to be a smartass, but it actually is and Engineering document, Work Order-----in this case MUCH better than any factory docs.

And yes Ol Geeeeezer they won't come cheap, but they are the real deal and WILL, without question, validate the car as it came out of Engineering.

Yes Mike, he is still suckin air and it was nice to chat with him.I got the feeling that if someone offered to let him "suit up" he would have jumped at the chance and been on the track in a flash.

Geoffrey, I think that you will find that

the obscured license plate will be of little help in tracing the car - it is probably a "Nassau" plate, issued to all of the racers so that they could go out and travel in the islands somewhat legally. Red Crise took care of his partygoers.

Re: Check out this old FI brochure

Thanks for the link to the Salesman brochure. I had not seen it before.

A picture or two shown in the brochure are the same or very similar to the photo's printed in Corvette News Vol.1 #1

Thanks..to Loren Lunberg..we know there were at Least 5 Corvettes that made the final Governors Trophy Races after qualifying. This included the Bill Mitchell SR2, 1 silver/Blue 56/57 maybe a private entry and 3 white w/blue stripe factory cars.

The Corvettes were driven by Ray Crawford, Dick Thompson, Jim Jeffords, Fred Windrage and probably one more..maybe Bill Mitchell. I am sure someone will be able to confirm.

          Art,

Yes, I know. I didn't think I needed to give the documentation details of what is still in existence for the car (I'll leave that up to you; it's not my territory), just comment that the chase would be an easy one.

            1960 Nassau Governors Trophy Race

I have a program for the December, 1960 Nassau race that lists an entry in Class C as "LeMans Corvette", Number 72 driven by Don Gist. Anyone know what car that might have been? Jim Jeffords is listed driving a Maserati.

That car was VIN #2538, now owned

by the Chip Miller family. Bill Frick sold it to Don Gist. The co-driver/mechanic at Nassau was the former Camoradi Corvette driver, Lee Lilley.
Don would later modify the car and campaign it in the NHRA drag racing
"Sports" for a year or so. It was succeeded by a '62, which became a national record holder. The '62 was acquired with the assistance of Don's Palm Beach neighbor, a gentle, retired giant named Harley Earl.

Re: That car was VIN #2538, now owned

Loren, Thanks for the information. I may have seen the car during its NHRA days. We used to go to Masters Field near Miami for the Sunday drags and see Don Gist race his Double Ugly modified racer along with Don Garlits with his earliest Swamp Rat. Gist was a used car dealer near us in Lake Worth who always had hot cars on his lot. I also remember when Harley Earl had a home over in Palm Beach and the "special" cars in his driveway. One being his Olds powered roadster. In the 1980's Bill Locke had owned one his 1963 S.O. Corvettes but sold it to the late Rick Carroll. Rick later offered it to me but I couldn't write the check so it went to a collector in California. Sorry to get off subject but these old cars stir the memories. Regards, Jim
