    C3 Stingray Emblem Part #?

I removed the Stingray emblem from my '70 which has 3 short 1/4 inch studs. Behind the adhesive at the top of the S is a part #3956216.
At the top of the N on the back side there is an embossed 2 in a circle. The stud that is missing and no sign of it cut off or removed is at the g.The letter i in the black area is indented horizontally.
Is this an early 1st Gen GM replacement part?

    Greg----

GM #3956216 was the part number for the side emblem used for all 1969-76 Corvettes and very early 1977 Corvettes. However, nuances of detail changed on the emblem over the years.

My recollection is that this emblem used on 3 studs. For 1969, the emblem was retained by speed nuts on 1 of the studs and by the adhesive on the back of the emblem, itself. This same attachment may have been used for early 1970, too.

In later 1970 the speed nut was eliminated and the emblem was held in place by the adhesive alone.

I believe that the configuration of the emblem changed slightly for 1974-E77. From about 1974 onward, the reconfigured part became the SERVICE part for all. As I say, the part number never changed throughout and is still available today.

I'm not sure what yours is, but it could very well be an original emblem.

I've noticed that their seems to be 2 styles of posts for the emblems, some have the short style, while others have a longer style post. Not sure when this change occured.

Greg the short studs as well as the horizontal line under the dotted "i" say that your emblems are repro's. No speed nuts have been observed on the side emblems.

As Joe mentions my Aug built 1970 has no speed nuts. I don't remember having any trouble removing the emblem in 1990 for stripping/repainting reference the adhesive being used at the factory. I did not use any adhesive or speed nuts when I put them back on. They have held in place well.

              Bob,
A repro will have an embossed GM part# on it as well?

Re: GM part # on all repro's

I'm not sure, as we judge the emblems "in-place".Don't see the back, but, there very well might be a GM # on what you would call service replacement parts.

The current service replacements have the GM #. I would probably expect to see the reproductions that Trim Parts is doing to also have the number, as several of their parts do. The incorrect studs and the line are current GM items. The only repro that I know of is the Trim Parts item and it is cosmetically correct
