I have 195-15 Michelin tires on my 62 with excellent tread. They are at least 15 years old. I am planning on putting original repros on the car for judging.
Are these tires good for anything other than lawn swings? I will toss but wondered if they were used anytime and amyone might want them. Pips are still on the sides.
Chris;I bought a 62 that had Michelin X tires on it,lots of tread life left,no visible cracks, correct pressure at all times.
We drove the car to Carlisle every year.At about 6am on the morning we left(to beat traffic)I felt a faint thump at normal speeds, this thump got steadily louder until it turned into a loud "slap",pulled off, waited for the local tire shop to open, and discovered "major"tread seperation on the right rear, minor tread seperation on the left rear and the hint of it on the right front.Needless to say,4 new sneakers and we went on our way.Tires have a "shelf life"weather they are on a car or not. Before you make the tire swing, make sure the rope isnt dry rot!.
I had a 25 year old set of Michelin XAS tires on my '62. Remember them? Lots of tread left. No cracks in the sidewalls. No bulges. Nothing out of round. Couldn't go over 35 mph. Felt like I was driving on ice. Could not keep the car in a straight line. Swerving and weaving. Went away with new tires.
