    Chris -

The term "backspacing" was never used by any OEM; wheels were specified by "offset", which is the dimension between the plane of the lateral centerline of the rim itself relative to the plane of the wheel mounting surface on the spider (center section). '62 5" wheels had 0.56" positive offset (rim centerline INBOARD of the wheel mounting surface is POSITIVE offset, and rim centerline OUTBOARD of the wheel mounting surface is NEGATIVE offset).

Backspacing is the dimension between the inboard edge of the rim flange and the wheel mounting surface.

      Chris -

Here's a good site for all manner of wheel technical information, including the various measurement methods: http://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html

Thanks John. I do know a little about wheels. I spent 4 years as a wheel design engineer. Did the B cars, W cars, Fiero and a few other wheels in the late 80's to early 90's (CPC).

I am considering puting larger wheels on my 62. Took measurement using my 5" standard wheels and 195 tires to the spring and body. Looks like I can bring in the tire slightly inboard but not much. Need the backspacing since that is the important dimension that way. All aftermarket wheels also give that dimension. From the archives 225's will fit on standard wheels. If I can find wheels with the same backspacing I can put on larger diameter wheels with the 225's.

If no one has it I will measure them once I get them off.

        thanks

          Chris -

If I hadn't left GM in '85 for Chrysler, I'd have probably met you; better late than never, thanks to our Michigan Chapter

I don't know about that. It is a huge company.

I have my wheels off and they measure 3 5/8" for backspacing.
