    '66 GAS TANK POSITION

The previous owner of my '66 convertible installed a new Quanta repro gas tank with reproduction straps. The filler neck was not centered in the opening in the body. I removed the straps, centered the tank and installed a pair of original straps. When I position the tank back far enough to center the filler neck it starts to ride up the straps where they attach to the rear frame rail, and when I tighten the straps the tank is pulled forward and won't remain centered. I've spent quite a few hours on this already. Assuming the filler neck should be centered in the opening, has anyone run into this problem and found a way to keep the tank centered during installation?

Rob, The original gas tank edge was bent down at the strap locations giving a rearward clearance of about 1/4-3/8 inch. Check yor tank for these indentations on the tank lip. I have sent you a photo thru e-mail... Don't know how to post one here.
