    73/74 Center Grill

Anyone aware if the center front grill (in place of the license plate) for the 73/74 is being produced in the reproduction market? I searched the archives and could only find info relating to the right/left grills.

Tom: I check the G.M. number on this part every once in awhile through Parts Voice. Ecklers comes up but I know their center grilles are reproductions listed under the G.M. PN. Give them a try. Tim

      Tom,

I've been searching for a '73 center grill for years. They are a VERY rare piece indeed. One came up for sale recently (NOS in box) on eBay and sold for almost $250. I bet it made the seller real happy to get that much! (Right?)

My experience with repro grills is that no one makes them, despite what the catalogues say. Not enough market demand, they say.

      Hope somebody proves me wrong......

        Tom----

1973 and 1974 grilles, while very similar, are not exactly the same. If I recall correctly, for 1973 the grilles had an exposed chrome face, but were otherwise painted semi flat black. For 1974, they were entirely semi-flat black. In any event, for both years the castings were the same and the grilles were of zinc-diecast construction, not aluminum as some folks think.

If I recall correctly, it seems to me that there either is or was a "reproduction" on the market, but they were of plastic construction. It's also possible that they were just some reworked version of the 75-79 grilles.

Joe, I did not realize that the 79-79 had a center grill, thought they had a solid license plate holder.

No, you're correct; 75-79 don't use a center grille, but I had kind of "drifted off" from the original question regarding center grilles and was into a discussion of 73-74 grilles, generally. I do see how it could have been confusing, though.
