    Just a question

Looking over the NCRS awards I think that a person that drives their Corvette compared to the person that trailers their Corvette has a greater chance to receive the
    Founders 135
    Bowtie 135
    Folz 40
    Awards
Why! how many people really think they can compete to receive the three top awards if they enjoy and drive their Corvette ! so 310 did receive awards if they did drive and are carful to maintain their Corvette to their best ability. These awards require a Corvette to be driven and to be driven as some awards require 500 miles or more , how would that Corvette do (as manufactured,%100 original, show as a NEW car right out of the factory without a single failure) to go for the three top awards.

Where the person not driving their Corvette (TQ) getting the three highest awards received
    Duntov 581
    Performance Vitrification 798
    Mclellan 32
All number are based on 2001 figures from NCRS.
So this raises a question . The greater numbers of people that receive the three higher awards number 1411 are at most (Trailer queens.) No driven points needed or required .
Why? (based on an original "as manufactured" standard at a NCRS event and all of which must operate as those of a NEW car, without a single failure)could a driver make it?
Today how many of those Corvettes are now sold ,being sold, having new owners or never to be seen again in storage?
Thousands of Corvettes have received a Fight award and to many people was and is an Achievement they longed for, then went back to driving and enjoying their Corvette.
Then we have the Sportsman award which recognizes the owner for bringing their Corvette .
We have a total of 1721 awards as of 2001 with all awards starting in 85,88,92,95 and 97 out of the thousands of members tells us what???????????
    Just asking.

New members are pushing 50.000 , while active paying members are around 15,000 wear are tho's missing Corvettes??

      Re: Just a question

      Roy,
I've read post three times--still trying to figure out what it says. Seems to me that the point you make so often in your posts--(they should be driven) is borne out by the fact that many members have received awards for doing just that. Help me understand why a Corvette owner can't do what he wants with his car without me telling him that he should be doing something different.
In addition, it seems to me that the NCRS is very clear about being about the preservation and restoration of Corvettes. What's wrong with being what we say we are?
And what is performance vitrification? Different from vilification?

        Roy

As a fairly new member, maybe 3or 4 years, I often struggle with this question. When I bought my first car, I didn't know what I wanted out of the hobby. The more I learned, the less I knew. Turns out, after this time, I think what I like is driving around in an original but worn corvette. One that looks like it's 35-40 years old, but has had a great life. When I put that up against NCRS standards, there really isn't a place for that car to excel. I've had a 2nd flight and probably could have had a top flight at a chapter meet except for the wrong headlights (I have the ones you can actually use at night) the wrong starter and alternator etc. All things I could have changed if I really cared. But that's OK. I had a good time at the meet. It was fun getting the car judged. Now that's out of my system and I can get on with having fun with the car.

Every time I think about this I reach the same conclusion. NCRS had to come up with a judging standard and they did what made sense to them to advance the hobby and to try to encourage preservation. It may not be perfect, but I doubt there is perfection in that area.

Maybe my attitude is a product of the Nuns telling me "It doesn't have to make sense for you to believe in it."

Rich, you have a perfect car for the founders award, drive the car, (I got a third flight with my '62 just to qualify for the fun parts) Write up an article for something you did to keep the car on the road, drive the road tour and have a ball.

              Re: Just a question

I'm with you on this Rich. NCRS is a point of reference, and it is up to the individual to do with it as he sees fit. Perfection is unobtainable, and even it was, where would be the challenge once obtained? It seems some are frustrated because there isn't a category for everybody's car to fit in. So what? Enjoy what you have, and if it doesn't please you, then change it or move on to something else!! We make friends here, we learn here, and we help each other here. To me, that approaches a state of perfection - sharing a hobby with those who appreciate the effort we all put into it. And few of us could do it as well without the advice and comraderie we all receive here. I say just relax, don't worry, and have a nice drive in the country

                Re: Just a question

I'm glad to see the different views here. I'm also a new member here. 2 years ago I purchased a 68 L-79 coupe from the second owner.Nicely optioned car and very original but needs new frame and full restoration. I insist on doing everything myself so its progressing very slow.
To fill the need to drive something I bought a 64 Coupe for a driver. This car has a lot of potential with an original dk blue interior and numbers matching drivetrain that runs great. Older lacquer paint looks stunning at 10' but has signs of stress and some beginnings of checking in select areas. The previous owner personalized the Daytona blue car with a BB hood and a light blue stinger stripe. The combo looks very nice especially with the 67 rally wheels. I do plan to replace the hood but will keep the rally wheels & michelin radials for driving. So last year I was faced with a decision. I believe the Adirondack chapter was having a meet in September on the same weekend as the Adirondack Nationals carshow was going on at Lake George,NY. My choice was to drive my car over to a meet where it would be a mutt and tell anyone who saw it what I planned for its future or go to the Adirondack Nationals where people would enjoy it for what it is. When the 68 is finished and achieves top flight I plan to drive it and then pull the 64 off its frame.
Being new to NCRS and never attending any meets I really didn't know what to expect but I knew enough to park outside the fence if I showed up with the 64 the way it is now.
I really wany to thank everyone here for all the help I have received in my quest to restore the 68 to top flight and nibble at whats wrong with the 64 while it remains a driver.

bring the car in sportsman class

I finally had the chance to attend the Orlando meet. I brought my very worn (and abused along the way) car for the sportsman class, almost as a joke just to see how people would respond. You would be amazed how nice many members were, wanting to check out the original ball joints, carpet heel pad, etc. They made me feel really welcome even though my car was far from pretty! I guess beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Bring your car and show it anyway!

                    Re: Just a question

I'm not standing on my soup box,I'm just asking if a mostly "driven" Corvette which can manage to get founders,Bowtie and Folz awards , could it also reach Duntov, Mclellan and the performance Vitrification awards. Can or has any one ever gotten all. And I'm not pushing for all Corvettes to be driven as most are.

Roy, one car quickly comes to mind. It was a '69 driven over 2,000 miles to be judged for and awarded a Duntov. Tom Maxwell's '62 is another car that comes to mind. I do not think that either of these cars has seen a trailer since they were delivered to the dealer when they were new. I am sure that there are numerous other cars that have done the same.

Roy, The least I would ask is that you read...

...the JRM regarding "Bowtie" judged cars. There is absolutely no reference or requirement that you drive a "Bowtie" judged car to the National Convention to have it judged. Driving will not help or hurt you. It has nothing to do with this type of judging... I sometimes wonder why I try to respond to Roy's wonderful posts...???

                          I did read the Bowtie.
I'm beginning to understand that asking or giving opinions can cause a person to be an ass hole in the eyes of some or may be many. I only in the last months decided to use this forum to meet other owners I would not other wise meet. To those I a fended may I say to them please accept my apologies. And in the future I'll try hard to keep my opinions out of any NCRS discussions .

Roy, I respect you, love your car no matter...

...what "options" it has, but I am committed to the NCRS Judging Standard. You owe no apology to me or anyone as far as I am concerned in expressing your opinions on this board. I feel that every time someone expresses an opinion on this board, it is just that, an opinion. No problem with that. What else is there? Best, Dennis
