Re: Last Days of the Mill

    Michael

I had a feeling years ago there would be a story to be told about the St.Louis plant..and so a fiend and I talked to and also video taped some interviews with those involved.

I also had a feeling that the guys that worked there should be chronicled in a book. I still do.

If any one wants to start the project I will contribute what I learned. I need to dig up some of that stuff and see if you recognize some of the people I talked to.

I didn't work there..but was interested as a Corvette owner.

Did you get a copy of the farewell poster showing the different cars and trucks that were made during the years? Interviewing a retiree..he let me make a photostat and I have it somewhere.

              Joe,

I have been trying to put names to the area that you mentioned but have not been able to. Being local to the plant in St. Louis County (10 miles) I did not retain that information that well unless it was a close friend.

One problem for me with putting a name to someone during that time is that I may only know them by the plant NickName that hey had. (Baby Hue, Sore Finger, Rabbit, Cotton or one of those crazy names we called some people) These names that I mentioned are from people in the plant who we all thought highly of and used the names in kidding but loving way.

To give everyone an idea of the workforce diversity with regard to their residences let me say this. The whole plant complex was made up of people who traveled long distances. Some came from Ill. while other came from as far as the boot heal of Mo. We had daily commuters and weekly commuters.

Re: Last Days of the Mill

I will have to find the guys name..but I talked to a guy who lived in Cuba, Missouri and commuted to the plant.

Years ago there was controversary over the hood markings on the yellow and the white 69 ZL1 cars.

One car had a decal and the other cars hood marking was painted. Both can be correct.. but the I talked to the guy in Cuba who worked at the plant...he said he was the guy that painted the hood marking...on the ZL1 Corvette

                  Joe,

On that question I have to beg off, I was working in the Hard Trim area and the hood stripes where put on in Paint Repair. I can only remember that over the years different methods were used.

Sorry that I can not nail that one down for you.
