    Another Q-Jet question

The carburetor on my '70 454 Corvette has the following numbers:7041211 indicating it is a '71 454 carburetor for standard transmission but the other numbers, a 1T, then followed by 2240 seems to indicate it being built the 224th day of 1970 or late August 1970. Correct? Why the heck do I have a '71 carburetor for a car built in March '70 with an automatic transmission? Me thinks someone replaced the carburetor at some point in time and didn't fully know what they were doing.

    Thanks,
    Scott

    Scott-----

Yes, methinks you're right. Somebody replaced the carburetor at some time. Whether they knew what they were doing, or not, I don't know. It depends what they were interested in. Very likely, this carburetor went through a commercial rebuilding operation and was "built up" to a carburetor which would SERVICE your application. The original numbers don't mean a lot after a carb (or, other part) has been through a rebuilding operation. For a carburetor, the basic core has to be reconfigurable to the application. The 7041211 would qualify as a core that would be functionally reconfigurable to the 70 application.

If the person that replaced it was just interested in a functional replacement, then they knew exactly what they were doing.
