    C2 wiring harness checking

The wiring harnesses that came out of my 63 convertible look fine to my unprofessional eye, and everything worked before the car was disassembled. Is there a recommended checking procedure that I need to perform to determine if anything needs to be replaced, or if one or more of the harnesses need to be replaced?

My original harness was OK except for where the wires were exposed (not wrapped). The insulator on those sections was very brittle and often cracked. The rest of my harness was un-butchered so i decided to unwrap, splice/solder, and rewrap. To my surprise, under the wrapping the wires looked and felt great.

I'd say a visual inspection with focus on connectors, terminals, and wire ends should give you an idea of whether or not it needs to be replaced.

If you don't have any abrasion areas the wirng should be OK. Check all your connectors for signs of corrosion and correct any problems. Most problems with wiring start in the connectors with corrosion, which leads to resistance, which leads to unwanted heat and destruction.

Wipe your wiring with laquer thinner to renew the colors where they are exposed.

I would recommend the old tried and true SMOKE test. Just stand by with a large chemical fire extinguisher and quick disconnect at the battery. Problems are usually detected rather quickly with this method.

I am doing the same with my '67. I am cleaning off any corrosion on the connectors with DeOxit. You can find it at radio shack or Eastwoods.
