    LoJac Anti-theft Experience Anyone?

As a recent new owner of a mid-year, I have fears of theft when parked unattended (for less than 10 mins hopefully). Does anyone have experience with these high tech anti-theft devices such as LoJac. The company supposedly puts the GPS sending unit somewhere on the car that no one can find. Seems kind of hard to do with Corvettes, which are inspected so meticulously at shows, etc., but I assume the company knows what they are doing. Perhaps I'm being too paranoid about the whole theft issue but I would appreciate any comments as to both the necessity and the effectiveness. Thanks.

P.S.This is a great board and is of immeasurable help to us newcomers.

I just wanted to put out some info on anti theft devices, I don't have experience with the LoJac system, but there are a couple of new items coming out which may be of interest. Sears now has a battery with I (assume) a remote kill inside of the battery. The other one is one that should be out soon from AC Delco which incorporates the kill circuit inside of the starter solenoid with no external wiring. I will be using this for my '68. Neither one helps with a Tow-Away, but certainly would deter hot wiring the vehicle.

My son put it on his mazda mitia in Dallas area. Guy put it on (in) without my son knowing where it is. I had a worker friend whose Blazer was stolen from motel parking lot in NJ and cops found it right away when he called them. So it does work if you know the car is gone. Also noone knows the car has it.

My son is a police officer in MA. He has told me that after a while the cops turn off the unit and pay no attention to it. Otherwise I guess they would spend a lot of time chasing stolen cars, and doing nothing else. The unit certainly does work, but it is my impression that they do not work everywhere; the local police need the units in the patrol cars.

                Re: LoJac Anti-theft Experience Anyone?

                David,

I am advised that if the thief thinks the car might be equipped with a locating system they park the stolen car for a day or two to allow it to "cool off." Then go back and get it, if police have not recovered it in that time.

The system does depend on the owner being aware of theft in order to notify law enforcement agency.

It is also hard for me to believe they can effectively hide the transmitter. I assume it must be hooked into the electrical system to get power. Perhaps in modern car they could find a location with all the electrical equipment there is, but in our older cars I would think it hard to conceal.

I appreciate everyone's input. I guess I'll talk to my local law enforcement as well as the LoJac people. Sounds like it may be a good insurance policy against nontheless, especially for us nervous types. Thanks, David
