        Jack,

If there was a revision to the current manual, then it sounds like the judge was doing his job properly but I still disagree with the unpainted master cylinder. If this is really the case, I will certainly have learned something but I've never seen an unpainted cyl that I felt was original. Will be interesting to hear from others on this.

          Re: cjinvestments@robsoncom.net

On Shark cars (used essentially the same MC as your '67), the descriptive text in the JG books might be better. They describe the MC body as being cast and painted BEFORE the final secondary operations that were done to convert it from a raw casting into a finished part. These secondary operation included milling, drilling and tapping the LH side of the MC for installation of bleeder screws and the fore/aft brake line fittings. Where the surface was milled, exterior paint would have gone 'bye bye'.

My hunch is the judges were telling you the MC should NOT have exterior paint on the side 'pads' that were created by milling while the balance of the MC SHOULD be painted black. Further, time has passed and since there's little space for judges to write extensive comments, you've forgotten the full text of what the judges had to say... That's pretty common, the judging process involves telling owners MANY things about their cars and it's easy to become 'overloaded' with information during the multiple Flight Judging owner debrief sessions!

Basically, look at the side of your MC. On the pads that do NOT have the original 'as cast' pebble grain surface texture and DO have circular swirl marks from the milling process, that's where you want the exterior paint to go 'bye bye'....

            Jack

Thanks for your response. I do remember reading that in the manual and I did use masking tape to cover those machined surfaces. I will double check the MC and make sure it appears the way you describe.
