    BB exhaust manifold gasket

    Hello Everyone,

    Ref. '66 L-72

A question regarding exhaust manifold gaskets. I know there should not be gaskets between the cyl. head and the exh. manifold, but I have my exh. manifold done by J. MacNeish and there is the aluminun spray on the machined surfaces where they mate with the head. Jerry recommends the use of gaskets and trim them so they can't be seen. I'd really like to keep it correct and not use gaskets, therefore, asking if anyone has had experience with MacNeish's treated manifolds w/o gaskets etc.

    Thank you for your help.

You may want to consider having the manifolds "surfaced" by a machine shop. Have them suface the smallest amount just to insure that the mating surface is flat and square to the head.

agree with pete. don't think you find any gaskets that, when installed between the head and manifold, will escape ncrs judges detection. mike

I've had several sets done by Jerry, and I just smoothed the mating surfaces with sandpaper on a hard rubber block, used no gaskets, had no leaks.

I'm surprised that Jerry would overlook this detail. For the price he
charges, I'd expect the mating surfaces to be cleaned for installation.

What exactly did Jerry have to say about this? Did you try to contact him?
          I would !

            Steve,

Jerry told me he used NAPA gaskets and trims them so you don't see them.
            Regards,

Thanks for the reply Peter, Mike and John. I'm going to have my neighbour at work who owns a machine shop, machine them to clean up.

              Good advise, thanks guys.

              Regards,
              Kurt
