PCV system...would this work?

I'm trying to make the Chevy 350 in my '59 look a little more "vintage" . I plan to run an oil fill tube with a vented cap on the intake (as in '59) and run a pcv valve from the side of the valve cover on the drivers side to the carb. The only change I am really making is taking the breather off the passenger side VC and moving it to the front of the intake. I bought a "baffled grommet" to install in the valve cover to prevent oil from comming through. Will this work? Thanks again. Pat

From a functional ventilation point of view it should work. The only "problem" will be that the RH rocker box will not be well ventilated, but that was the case with BOTH rocker boxes on the early PCV systems with the rear crankcase outlet.

Any PCV valve used on a 350 should provide proper flow control and there are probably different style valves for various applications - some have hose nipples on each end and some are designed to fit into a grommet on one end with a hose nipple at the other, so that gives you some design flexibility. I assume the carb you are running was designed for a PCV system, so the idle/off idle fuel metering should be okay.

The only issue might be oil ingestion if the "baffled grommet" doesn't do a good job of liquid-vapor separation. You might have to resort to welding a small sheet metal baffle on the inside of the valve cover and there is probably room for something without interfereing with the pushrods.

Thanks Duke. Yes, the carb is designed for a PCV system. I figured that if I had a two part system (breather on one, pvc valve on the other) I should be okay. Hopefully the baffled grommet will do the job. Pat

Hi Chris. In the Jegs catalogue part# 720-5425 is this MR GASKET item described as "Designed to virtually eliminate ''oil breather blow by'' on non-baffled valve covers with push-on breathers. Fits 1-1/4'' diameter hole."

Moroso makes one too, very similar, except it has a "slit" instead of the larger opening in the one in the photo; I used the Moroso grommet on the 383 in my Grand Sport and it worked fine.

I will try and post a pic of the baffle I built and welded into my tin cover. I to put in the firewall end of the cover so that it would be less noticable.Despite my measuring I did have to 'modify' it to clear the rockers.

The grommet goes in the valve cover hole small-end first, and the rib holds it in place from the inside with the flange at the top against the outer surface; then you insert the PCV valve into the grommet. Look at the rear of the valve cover in the photo to see one installed with the PCV valve in it.
