    C2:67 Dale, Your M/C Caps

    Dale,

While I was doing a few honey-do's today, I figured I'd put your master cylinder caps in the plating tank in the in-between time. Here they are after the second one came out of the dichromate dip:

Got to admit that your original 67 one (on the left) came out a little better then the younger 68 one. I used the 68 one for practice, and then put on a little heavier zinc on the 67 one. However, the 67 one was in a little better shape to begin with. Here's the before shot(the 67 on the left):

I brought out some nice red and green tones with a hair dryer.
Here's the after shot (67 on the left):

I'll mail you back the 67 one on Monday.

    Still having fun!

Is this your proffesion ? or are you a hobbyest and doing this at home?

Your results are great. How much of an investment was all of the material.

      Just a weekend tinkerer

Here's my copy cad and zinc setup:

I initially bought a 3 gallon Caswell kit (www.caswellplating.com)for about $250. With other parts and supplies, I'd say I'm into it about $500. I rigged up a power supply with a battery charger, and a dimmer switch in series with a light bulb socket. Does a pretty good job of controlling voltage and amperage, although you can buy a digital rectifier from Caswell for $$$.

I'm just doing Zinc and Dichromate right now as it is the easiest especially on small flat parts. Getting a little stymied right now on a carburetor body to get a nice even finish with all the little crevices. A dentist friend of mine has some tooth gold, and I might experiment with that in the future.

Thought I'd do a Restorer story one of these days on plating, and I took on the M/C caps to work on the techniques. They were easy, about an hour a piece while I was doing something else.

The supplies are fairly expensive. Anode plates, plating and dipping solutions, and I've already had a few requests, but I only do it for fun. If someone should send me a small part with a zinc anode plate, or a spare part for my 67 convertible, I'll do it for them.
