I have spent the entire weekend trying to fit the glass back in the doors and have had no luck. I replaced the grip strip and the rear and front channels, and as the window starts to come down the entire assembly moves back about 1/2 inch and the window comes out of the track in front. Any help or ways to adjust would be appreciated.

Re: side window fit 1966 roadster
This is also how I spent my weekend, working on my '63 coupe. There is a lateral movement in the window as it is raised and lowered - it does shift front to back as it moves up and down. This movement is captured and controlled by the front and back channels. In my case, there isn't enough space between the two channels to allow the window to pop out. In fact, it's a rather tight fit. Unless I'm not understanding your situation, it sounds like the "bar" on the back of the window frame may not be riding in the rear channel? Are the two channels bolted in place? Maybe a picture would help.
Aren't these side windows a total PITA!??

Afterthought
I've been thinking about this some more this morning. Do you have an obstruction in the front channel that is not allowing the window to pass? In this case, further cranking effort might cause a reaction like you describe as the window tries to get past the obstruction.

Re: side window fit 1966 roadster
Jerry,
It has been about 6 years since I rebuilt my window tracks and just replacing the front channel and rear chanel filler strip/felt really tightened mine up. If the window is running in both tracks but comes out of the front one on the way up I would suggest trying to shim the rear track at its attachment points inside the door jam.
