I have a 66 4 speed. The clutch pedal moves side ways about 1 inch. I would like to rebuild with new bushings. Is it best to remove the clutch and brake pedal assembly to rebuild. Where can I find instructions on removal and repair?

The only way to repair this is to rebuild the assembly. For all intents and purposes, the clutch and brake pedal are an "integral" assembly. You will need to remove both from the car and determine which other pieces that you need for a complete repair. You may need a new clutch pedal in addition to other parts like the bushings and return spring. Excellent reproductions of the clutch pedal are available and all of the small parts are also easily available. You won't know just what you need until you get everything out and inspect it.
Instructions for removal of the pedals can be found in your factory service manual. Also, some "pictorial information" can be found in the AIM. This is not an easy and uncomplicated job---you won't be able to do it in an hour or two. It will involve lowering or removal of the steering column and you may have to remove the instrument panel for easier access. Fortunately, for a mid year removal of the left side instrument panel is not too difficult. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 66 Clutch pedal
With a clutch pedal that move 1" side to side, you will find that your clutch pedal is broken where it meets the cross shaft. You can remove it and have it welded but in about a year you will be doing it again, so go ahead and buy a new pedal now before you disasemble your car.- Top

Re: 66 Clutch pedal
Joe, Thanks for the info. Since I have the steering column out and the instrument panel out for repair does this make the job easy. It looks like I remove the master cylinder, remove the clutch rod from and pedal and remove the 2 bolts holding the clutch and brake unit to the dash. Anything else I need to know. Ken- Top

That's about it - remove the bolts attaching the driver's end of the support assembly to the lower dash reinforcement, unplug the brake light switch connector, disconnect the master cylinder pushrod from the brake pedal (don't break the spring retainer clip), and pull the assembly out. Once it's on the bench, it's easy work.- Top
