I have used PPG's DDL-9300 lacquer with good results. I believe that you can shoot it right out of the can with no thinning

was the paint on the mufflers the same as under the hood an grill? anyone know of a good spray can of paint that would be close? how much gloss is on the muufflers as opposed to the grill area an under hood?

Archival GM photos at Body Drop show the early C3 muffler blackout to be quite glossy; it wasn't lacquer like the underhood blackout - it was cheap asphaltic-based "chassis black" paint.

I just used Krylon Semi-Gloss and it worked great. The mufflers do not get hot enough to warrant high heat paint. The mufflers on my 72 look like they were done just yesterday, and I've put a couple thousand miles on it.

FYI, when I first bought my 71 I painted the mufflers Rustoleum silver with a brush (in 1994). When I took off that exhaust 2 years ago and replaced it, the mufflers had just started to look poor. So, don't worry about high heat.
