    427/425 hard starting

On cold starts it seems that just when I let off the key it gets that extra jolt of power to fire the engine up. I find myself cranking the engine until it gets spinning good then let off the key..

The car has a replacement TI coil, reproduction TI harness and a good battery.

    Any suggestions??

From what you have mentioned, the wire from the starter solenoid putting 12 volts to the coil is not attached. This wire supplies 12 volts to the coil only during the start position of the ignition switch.

      Chip,

Do you have the upgraded circuit board installed in the amplifier? If you do, swap it out for the original type and your problem will disappear.

Take it from someone who knows!

        Don,
Your comment on the upgraded circuit board has me worried. I just installed one in my 67 TI amplifier over the winter. Don't tell me I can expect starting problems when I go to bring it out of storage......

          Rick,

I went through several years of having the engine crank over and not fire util I released the key. I had some brake problems and didn't have the time to fix it myself so I took my car to the local "Corvette" expert and mentioned the problem to him. When I picked up the car, he told me the starting problem was in the "upgraded" circuit board and he replaced it. The car fires at the turn of the key now.
Ironically, I had discussed this problem with Dave Fiedler when it first started and he assured me the TI system either works or it doesn't. After the problem was solved, I spoke to Dave at Carlisle and he confessed that he had discovered an intermittant problem that could cause this. It's not in every board, and had something to do with sensing voltage at the distributor. If I would send him my distributor and aplifier, he would set it up to work properly. At this point, the car starts great and I've got the "upgrade" board when I need it (in my parts drawer).
I wouldn't worry about it unless you exibit the same symptoms.

            Thanks for the information.
I probably have an identical issue with my 67 427/435. I was about to replace my ignition switch thinking I had a switch problem. My car would crank and if I would back off slightly on the key rotation it would start. My TI system was upgraded and set up by Dave Fiedler about five years ago.

check to make sure you are getting 12 volts to the ignition system from the starter solenoid while cranking the engine. i think it is the pink wire at the distributor connector
