    C 1 Roy Braatz, U R Right Again !

You told me & it happened. I took my new spare restored soft top frame to have Al's new canvas with zippered window put on. I can't use my BLM.Survivor Top & let the hot Arizona sun bake it away. I'm getting ready to retire my 58 & I need to put anything original in climate control. So the Top Shop calls & says to me, "Well we got the mohair" but no one seems to know about the rest of the weather stripping having a cloth cover on it. I laughed & said to myself, Roy,that ole rattle snake! He told me, Deb,he said; when I first got my car in October, that know one ever seen a old Corvette with the original weather stripping. So I got to bring Blu over in the morning so they can see if they can duplicate it. BTW, Roy, they charged me 124.00 to replace a lever seal & adjust the linkage. They said the fluid looked 47 years old. Should I put some miles on & change it again ? Steve suggested I do that, it sounds like it makes sense to me. Run it & get the goo out & change it again. What do you say ?
    Thanks,
    Deb

Deb, Steele Rubber in NC makes a product called Bowdrill. It is a cloth material with a sticky backing that can be applied to your weatherstrips.

As far as the trans fluid goes some shops have a machine they hook-up to the cooling lines that will flush the entire system.

Doing a "fluid flush", if done long enough, will in fact change the fluid. It will not change the filter and will not give anyone a chance to inspect the transmission pan for signs of serious problems.

An experienced transmission man can tell a lot about the condition of the transmission from the material in the bottom of the pan. Even relatively new transmissions will have some material in the bottom of the pan as a result of normal wear. Serious wear will be detectable with the pan off.

I wonder what the cost difference is between a "flush" and pulling the pan for inspection and changing the filter.

Hey Roy, Were you at Knoxville last weekend? I saw a grizzled old fellow with a NCRS shirt and spoke with him--told him I had a '69. He said he was a solid axle guy and was obviously unimpressed. Anyway a guy standing next to me says, "I have a solid axle car." Oh yeh says the grizzle, what year? Why a '66 the guy says. The grizzled look was priceless. I walked away feeling better.

                Roy,

You are right, a cast iron powerglide has no pan, but it does have a reservoir with access plates on the sides, beside and below the torque converter.

That grizzled old guy at Knoxville was most likely Doctor Rebuild (aka Geoff Coenen) .....who told me that he hasn't been there in many, many years. He and his wife recently bought a motor home and have taken it on the road again. He also said he'd be in Charlotte, NC this weekend.
