I'm installing a new dash pad in my '59 and as a pre '60 C1 owner, I don't get to use a bezel around the speaker grill. If I mount the speaker grill from underneath the dash, it it doesn't come up high enough to be flush with the dash pad. Is it supposed to? To do so, I assume I have to shave foam from the inside of my Al K dash pad, correct? Or does it mount the way I will show in my next post? Thanks. Pat G.

In this pic I have the speaker grill on top of the dash, just under the pad.
It comes up nice and flush but I know it isn't right. Has anybody tried this?

Hi Wayne. In 1960 I believe they started using a bezel around the speaker with a different grill and that grill went on top of the pad. For '58 and '59 I believe the grill is mounted underneath, between the dash and the speaker. At least it looks that way in the AIM. Another member has suggested using coarse sandpaper to remove or thin the foam in that area (thanks Larry). I will do that. I also think I can modify the grill slightly in the area where the bolts go through. Doing that and sanding the foam should get me an extra 1/8" to 3/16" which would be perfect. Mounting the grill on the top, between the pad and the dash as in my 2nd pic looks like it would work great but I would never be able to remove it without first removing the windshield assy and peeling back the pad. Don't think I would ever need to remove it but you never know. Thanks. Pat GComment

Your grille looks great with it sitting on the top of the FG. If you don't tell 30K plus people in NCRS they will never know the difference.

In order to mount the speaker grille on
top and SECURE it, you're going to have to remove the studs and replace them with machine screws; then place the grille on top. Sanding or otherwise t******* the foam will only create a "decuction valley" around the speaker grille. Using the machine screws will not make it impossible to later remove the speaker - the grille might be a little tough - you'll just have to replace the pad - but that shouldn't be for another 15 years.Comment

Thanks Loren. The studs are missing already. I have made up some T bolts (one is shown in pic# 2) that could go through the grill first. I have been thinking that if I were to trim off the lip of the grill and leave only mounting "tabs" to fit in the 4 recessed areas (where the studs were), the grill would drop into the dash about 1/8" and any hardware (flat top of T bolt) would be flush with the top of the dash.

I would not trim any foam around the speaker grill area. I don't know what it's supposed to look like on a 59, but I like the way your second picture looks.

Hi Larry. This is what a '58/59 grill looks like. Installed I BELIEVE it should look like my second pic but I don't know for sure. When I got the car, the grill was installed upside down and it had the 1960-62 bezel around it. If anything, it was a great place to throw loose change. In the first pic I have installed from the bottom as in the AIM but it sits near the bottom of the cutout in the dashpad. If and when the pad shrinks, it would show there. The second pic looks best. They do a 59 in the Al Knoch video. If we don't get a firm answer I'll pull it out tonight and get your answer.

I found the tape and Al Knoch puts it on from under the dash after the pad is on. Cut the bottom out of the oval depression leaving the sides on. It looks like its sits about 1/8 inch below the pad when everything is tightened.

Pat,
I was following your post and the answers everybody gave you because I am about to install a new pad on my 59. I have a Al Knoch dash pad and was going to attach the speaker grill underneath as per the AIM.
Today I was out in the garage checking out the measurements to see how my problem might be the same as yours. Over all I seem to have the same problem but with a twist.
I came up with something that was not covered in the discussions. The height of the speaker screen, when installed underneath a bare dash, is different at the front and the rear edges. I am reading a 1/8 in difference between the two. The front top edge of the speaker screen at the dash is measuring less that the rear edge. Did you see this with your car’s dash? I believe that I can shim the speaker screen level with the dash pad if I install from the underside but I am concerned about the level if I install the screen prior to the dash pad.Comment

I have a17K original 59 and the speaker sits EXACTLY as Tony describes. Slightly different at the front and back edges and approximately an 1/8 inch recess on sides. Seems odd but that is the way it is.Comment
