Can anyone tell me the difference between a 14 X 5 steel wheel with an A on each side of the valve stem and a 14 X 5 wheel with a B on each side of the valve stem? Wheels in question are stamped GM 65 near the bolt pattern. Thanks

Re: Kelsey Hayes wheel I.D. "Drawing info"
Clare, I was able to get drawing PN 3723561 which was the 5" steel wheel for '62 and '61. None of the earier drawings were available electronically. This is a KH drawing that was entered into the Chevrolet system.
The drawing was first released 9/23/55 but the first date in the revision column is 4/12/62 with a 32 balloon note. In other words there were about 31 previous revisions that are not noted on this drawing (but still there unless superceded). The latest revision date is 2/26/68. It is very hard to read and some is illegible.
There are two different wheels in a chart, with an even earlier one that was removed 10/9/67. I will refer to them as 1,2,3 with 1 being oldest. 2 was there before 4/13/62. 3 was added 5/7/62. 3 wheel is noted as pn 3834956 (black primer) which I believe is the wheel still available from GM and the NOS wheel you have.
A revision dated 10/9/67 notes that 2 and 3 were previously welded and all welded notes removed and rivets added. (1 was removed at this time) The drawing only shows a riveted design which I assume went into production sometime after 10/9/67. 2 has the larger valve stem hole and 2.91 center hole diameter. 3 has the smaller valve hole and smaller 2.78 center hole diameter.
But to the question of what D means. Per the drawing the 3 wheel should have this designation. 2 wheel should not.
There is no mention of dogbone holes in the center but probably would not be even if they were there. They would show up in the KH center drawing since they are there for manufacturing the center and serve no purpose on the vehicle. All nubs are there and there is no safety bead. Also this drawing shows the double hump.
Now, I do not have info on wheel 1 since it was removed and cannot tell what the difference was between 1 and 2. Since the only revisions to the drawing at the same time as the part number removal was a title change, the only features that could be different on 1 is valve hole size, center hole size or finish (items listed in chart). It probably one of those that was different.
But it looks like 1 was welded, double hump, with all nubs, and no safety beads
It also looks like this wheel never had rivets during vehicle production.
