    C3 front clip installation

I'm going to tackle installing the front clip on my 68 convertible. I have all the necessary fiberglass and bonding strips. I have Evercoat bonding adhesive. Is this a quality product? I've rebuilt the door hinges. Reinstalled and aligned the doors. What would be best starting point in tackling this job. Any helpful tips will be greatly appreciated.

What kind of parts are you using? Who`s the manufacturer? Are you replacing the innerfenders also? Lots of questions before you start. In general Evercoat products are OK. but If the parts are Sheet Moulded Compound (SMC) you will need to use the correct bonding material. You can do it off the car or on the car but you shouldn`t use screws or pop rivots or you will never hide the holes.

Wayne, I'm using he correct type of bonding adhesive for my fiberglass. Gm parts for everything except front valance panel It's made by Vanacor. Inner fenders are used set that are in good shape. Why can't you use the pop rivets didn't the factory use them in assembly?

U can get GM lower valance panel.....

from almost anywhere, Mid Ameriocam Baers, Ecklers, etc. I use Evercoat products, good stuff. Be sure to use their Slick Sand, to seal all the glass.

Using screws/pop rivets requires that you drill holes, and afterwards, filling the holes is tough, a lot of work involved, and always, down the road, signs will appear where you patched the holes. Best to use c-clamps, or misx the bonding coumpound so it sets up quicker, then hold the inner fenders or other panels in place by hand. Used this method when installing my inner fenders last summer.

          Bryan,

I used screws and "Vette Bond" to hold the new fenders I put on my '72 to the bonding strips and then ground down the seams and laid more glass over the seam (and holes) and finished with Vette Bond and glazing putty. This worked well for me. Just make sure you glass over the holes because they will show afterward with variations in ambient temperature. Holding it with clamps is the best bet if you can get them where you need them. Sometimes there my be a ripple here or there if it doesn't match perfectly that you just can't get a clamp on. I would use screws as opposed to pop rivets because with the screws you can adjust how tight you make them to get the panels perfectly flush. Also, they are easier to remove.

          Good Luck, Bob Booth

Where did you get the surround panel? Original GM panels have been unavailable for years and the last ones were crapppppppp. Who was the manufacturer is it press moulded polyester glass or SMC? Just asking these questions to determine what you need to use you dont want to make a mistake here.

Ok I hope they are the good ones. Here is the on car proceedure in order. 1) Mount innerfenders. 2) Position top hood surround. Hood mounts must be set. 3)Long side B/S and hang side fenders.4) Front lower grille panel. Make sure of demensions etc. at every step. All bonded surfaces must be ground or sand blasted. Use material compatable with SMC if you have any of those panels,as many of the later GMs were.

Wayne, Surround panel came with the car. I got the car from a man that had it in his garage with the intentions on putting it back together for 13 years. The surround is a used one taken, from a parted out car. It's a 68. Thanks, to all the people who took the time to answer some of my questions. Bryan
