I have installed a new temperature sender in my 1963. But I cannot get it to work right. My gauge will not work , But when I ground the sender the gauge will respond. But when I take off the ground it will not work. These senders are supposed to be grounded on the block. I have not used any substance on the sender. Any one have any idea what is wrong here. It doesn't seem to be the temp gauge itself because as I wrote when I ground it myself the temp gauge will work. Thanks

Re: temperature sender for a 1963
I have always assumed that since the strap is shown in U69 radio section it is only for radio interference, like the exhaust to frame straps. I am missing mine (1966) and my sender works. Of course there could be another return path to ground.

Re: temperature sender for a 1963
Randy, you are correct.
The negative battery cable is connected to the engine with a starter motor attaching bolt. There is a black wire (ground) from the engine wiring harness connected at the same place, I'd start looking there. The symptoms point to a poor ground.- Top
