My 65 sb 4 speed seem to be stuck in 3rd gear. I can drive it in 3rd gear but every other gear just kills the motor when the clutch is released. When the car is up on jacks and and the engine running the rear wheels will turn in nuetral. The wheels stop when the clutch is depressed. I don' t think it is the linkage. The levers on the trans case are in the nuetral detent. Engaging 1st,2nd or reverse when on jacks causes a loud clunking or grinding gears when the clutch is released. Is this the symptoms of a transmisson rebuild or a simpler problem?

Re: tranmission problems
It is stuck in 3rd gear. The shifter is not pulling the trans out of 3rd when you moved the lever. Put the shifter in nuetral, get under the car with a 1/2 - 9/16 box end. On the side cover of the trans there are two shifter arms held on by a nut or in some cases a bolt. The lever most forward is for 3rd/4th while rocking the rear tire or the drive shaft try to move the lever. You will find three positions, put it in the middle position.
Typically the problem is caused by a shifter that is out of adjustment or one that is binding.- Top

Re: tranmission problems
The shifting became more difficult and stiff. I checked the lube level and it was a little low. I added about 1/2 pint and the shift improved. Then about a month later the transmisson froze. The levers on the side of the case are being operated properly by the linkage. I talked to a local operator of a shop that specializes in standard transmissons. From my description he believes 3rd gear is frozen . He said it happens more often with 1st & 2nd gear but the symptons are typical. So I am planning to remove the transmisson and take it to him. Thanks for your interest and response.- Top
