    spare tire carrier question?

My buddy Just purchased a 66 corvette and brought it over for some close inspection since he knows I am restoring mine to NCRS specs. So while it started out as him trying to gleen information from my restoration and info books, it turned into a give and take situation leaving me with a lot of questions as well....
My first, of many ,that does not seem to be covered in the JG is :on his spare tire carrier ,just above the start of the V , are the letters; MFG 1 ,and under that the #s 19146 .

Mine does not have this ! Which is correct?

    More to follow ,

    Jim -

MFG was the Molded Fiber Glass corporation (the supplier, in Ashtabula, Ohio); the rest is probably a date code of some sort.

      John,

Thanks for the reply. So are you saying that an original carrier should have this ? The JG doesn't mention it. It does say that the origanal tub has no numbers but the replacement does. I want to know which carrier is a replacment and which is an origanal.

        Jim -

I don't know if the spare tire tray is supposed to have source/date markings or not (mine doesn't) - was just responding to your question about what the markings on yours might be.

          John,

I was afraid that might be the case.

My carrier doesn't have it either but my pals does and it sure doesn't look new! Oh well, mabey I will post the question again .This time to 66 owners only and see what happens!

          Thanks again for your responces,
          Jim

All of a manufacturers original products do no necessarily look the same. Mold markings can vary from one part to the next. Both carriers could be original.

As an example, early C3 tire carriers are found both with and without the Rockwell label embedded in the surface resin. This label typically has a week(?)-year date code. The absence of the label doesn't necessarily mean the tire carrier is a replacement...both type tire carriers were made by Rockwell and are original. Having done all this speculation, the final word should come from a midyear judge.
