    oil pan gasket

I would like to replace the oil pan gasket on my 63 SHP, it leaks. It looks like I may have to remove the tie rod to get clearance. Any guidance on this and parts needed would be appreciated.

yep drop it and if you are not chasing points get a fel-pro one piece and follow the instruction that come with the gasket. alway put the damper TDC mark at 6:00 oclock position to get the crankshaft counterweights in the best position to slid out the pan

If you disconnect the steering idler at the frame, you can pull the steering linkage down far enough to clear the pan (use Clem's tip - it makes a difference).

Even if chasing points, you can always paint it orange on the edges, either before installation or after.
Don't ask how I know this.

i had trouble with the one piece gasket. should i have used some type of adhesive to hold it to the pan before i wiggled the pan back up into place. i think i dislodged the gasket. there was a VERY bad oil leak after i replaced the gasket last fall. the car is still in storage. any advice will be appreciated.

you should have gotten plastic items to hold the gasket to the block while you install the pan.

i did and i used them, but the gasket was not tight against the block; it was floppy and hung away from the block. maybe i didn't use them the right way. i had trouble when i had to tip and wiggle the pan into place, especially at the rear where the gassket seemed buried by the starter etc. i would have preferred to use adhesive to stick it onto the block surface, nice and tight. i wonder if i had the right gasket?? someone said the c-2 BB's were different from later BB's.

The little blue things used to hold the gasket should hold the gasket tight to the block. If that was not occurring, you were not doing something correctly.

if i remember right, from last fall, i used a screwdriver to screw in the blue things, and i did this until they bottomed out. maybe i should have cut off some of the threads to shorten them. that would have tightened things up. i can see what you and clem are saying. the directions did not mention this, but i should have figured it out on my own. guess i was tired.

                    Werner-----

The pan gaskets for all 1965-74 Corvette big blocks are functionally identical. For that matter, the pan gaskets for all Mark IV big blocks manuafctured from 1965 through 1991 are functionally identical. Mark V and Mark VI are different, though.
