    1967 BB Head Gasket Numbers

I am looking for the correct head gasket numbers for 1967 427/437 and also for 1967 L88/L89. Aslo can someone clarify head gasket number 3887179 - is it for the 435 [427 HD] or is it for the aluminum heads?

If you're talking about ORIGINAL gasket part numbers, they are as follows:

    1967 L-71 and L-89 ------------GM #3863199

    1967 L-88----------------------GM #3887179

In 1968 gasket #3921940 was released to PRODUCTION for L-89 applications. This gasket became the SERVICE gasket for 1967 L-89 applications, too. However, as far as I can tell, it was not used for 1967 L-89 in PRODUCTION and there was NO predecessor part number.

The GM #3863199 is a steel shim type gasket. That would be inadvisable to use for an aluminum head application, but maybe GM didn't know that back in 1967. Or, it's possible that the L-88 gasket which is a composition-type gasket was actually used in PRODUCTION for the 1967 L-89 applications, too. It only matters to a maximum of 16 folks, though. The current iteration of the GM #3863199 gasket is known as GM #330860 and it's still available from GM. I would not recommend its use for ANY 1967 L-89, though.

The GM #3921940, the 1967 L-89 SERVICE and 1968-69 L-89 PRODUCTION and SERVICE gasket, was discontinued in April, 1990 and replaced by GM #10159508. Alas, that gasket was discontinued without supercession in January, 1999.

The GM #3887179, the ONLY gasket ever catalogued by GM for the 1967 L-88 application, was discontinued without supercession in February, 1992. So, at this point, it's moot as to whther it was ever used for 1967 L-89, or not; you can't get any, either way.

All of the above is "nice-to-know" from an historical and academic perspective, but, as a practical matter, someone that uses anything but a Fel-Pro #1027 aka GM #12363414 head gaskets on ANY L-88 or L-71/89 is absolutely NUTS. Unless, of course, that someone decides to use a Cometic #C5816 MLS gasket. That's better yet (at twice the price of the $50/each Fel-Pro gaskets, of course).

      Joe,
Regarding the L88 3887179 gasket. Do you happen to know what the use of the "no hole", "1 hole" or "2 holes" ment. This was located in the tab that extended at the cornor of the gasket. If you were to install these gaskets this tab would extend outside of the engine surface. I hope that I have explained it well enough, if not I do have pictures of these 3 different gaskets. Thank You.

I am familiar with the "tab" that is exposed. However, I've never paid any attention to any holes that might be in it. Such holes would be completely non-functional and must be some sort of vestige of manufacturing. It may be that the gaskets as originally configured had a certain "hole" configuration and as later configured had a different "hole" configuration. GM had many different gasket suppliers and each may have had slight differences in how they made gaskets within non-engineering specs or as otherwise allowed by the GM blueprints. So, the GM #3887179 may very well have changed thusly over the years of its availablilty from 1966 to 1992.
