    GM Silicone Sealer - #12346192

I picked up some of this today after seeing it mentioned in a previous thread.
Can this stuff be used "any where" you use permetex(oil pan, frt timing cover, etc) or is it only for intake sealing.

    Thanks

    Jim-----

GM #12346192 is an RTV silicone sealer specifically formulated for oil sealing. So, you can use it anywhere you're trying to seal oil. Like most silicone RTV products you CANNOT use it for applications exposed to gasoline. In addition, GM does not recommend it for use in sealing engine coolant-exposed areas.

I always hated using rtv sealers till I used the GM stuff. It seems to have a "body" to it and sets up very fast. Cures to a dark gray color. I had a problem sealing the rear differential cover on my old pickup. USed every brand sealer on the market. Cleaned the areas with everything I could think of and one time let it cure ( that blue stuff)overnight and it still leaked. A buddy gave me a tube of the GM stuff and it never leaked again. That sold me on the stuff... I also sealed the intake (front & rear) the way GM did. That was around 76,000 and that truck now has 227,000 on it and it never leaked. I'm sure you'll like it.

        Steve----

Believe me, GM doesn't manufacture this stuff. Most of GM's sealers and threadlockers are manufactured by Permatex/Locktite and there is an equivalent product available under that brand. I don't think that the 12346192 is a Permatex product, though; it may be General Electric or some other.

It's always important to use the right sealer for the job. I keep just about every one made in my "bag of tricks". However, the one I use the most and feel best about is Permatex Ultra Copper. That's about as close as you can get to a "universal" RTV. However, even it's not acceptable for use with gasoline exposure. There is no generally available RTV which will withstand exposure to gasoline and many other petroleum solvents. For that application you need a flurosilicone. They're available from aerospace suppliers and are very expensive.

I was told once and it make sense to me:
Permatex blue - for water passages, Permatex black - oils, Permatex red - high temps. Remember not to use original stinky stuff on computer controlled engines, it bugs the o2 sensor. Thats why they developed the Ultra blue odourless.

              Frank-----

The Permatex Ultra Copper can be used for all the applications you described except on the oxygen sensor. I would not use any sealer on the oxygen sensor. Whenever they're removed, they should be replaced (otherwise, don't remove them). New sensors are pre-coated with a special anti-sieze/sealant and no other coating should be applied.
