After 29 years of intermitent turn signal canceling problems, I decide to look at the problem a little closer. Here's my question. In Noland Adams book (pg.249), the ST-12 servicing guide (pg 12-2) and the 1960 Assembly Manual (sec.12 pg.10) they show a "cam" part. number 5943818. It attaches to the back of the steering hub with 2 screws and has an arm that sticks out that contacts the pivoting cancel arms and returns the switch to the neutral position. On my car, the hub has 2 "ears" that stick out and 1 has a pin in it , the other is missing. The holes that the screws are supposed to go into to attach the "cam" are not threaded all the way through (they are tapped from the front side of the hub for using a wheel puller) so I don't believe there ever was a "cam" installed on this car.
I've been told by some parts vendors that passenger cars had the "cam" set-up and Corvettes used the pin set-up like what I have. Why do all the Corvette books show the "cam"?
I've looked in several parts catalogs and it seems that every piece of the turn signal assembly is available except nobody even lists this "cam" for sale.
I sure would like to get a definitive answer on this.
Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jim
